Sewing Lab
Description: Sewing Lab is a time for sewing students to finish projects with the guidance and support of a sewing instructor. This is not a replacement for Sewing 1 or Sewing 2; but a supplement for more time and space to practice and learn with an encouraging instructor present. Think of it like “office hours”.This class is unstructured, so sewists can work on individual projects at their own pace with access to all studio machines and supplies. An instructor will be available to provide individualized help with any sewing elements that may be confusing or tricky so you can finish that “work in progress” pile! You must know the basics of a sewing machine*. During the lab, you can ask questions and/or get specific practice on a skill (ex: finding the appropriate stitch selection for a project, how to sew with thicker fabrics, learning how to ease in a sleeve cap, etc.) Maybe you’ve got a pattern you want to start and need assistance.
*Sewing lab is not for the sergers unless you’ve already taken “Intro to Sergers” prior.
How is Sewing Lab different from Open Studio? Open Studio allows you access to the studio, but doesn’t provide hands on sewing guidance. No dedicated sewing instructor is available during open studio hours.
How is Sewing Lab different from Community Open Studio Night? While community nights have an instructor present, this instructor may have specialties in other areas (knitting, jewelry, printing, etc.) Sewing lab provides sewing specific help and is not open to other crafts.
Instructor: Amanda Edwards
Amanda has taught middle & elementary school for over 12 years. She discovered garment sewing in 2018 by making a simple woven top and was immediately hooked. Since then, she has learned many more sewing techniques & skills while working toward a goal of crafting a completely handmade wardrobe. Sewing has helped her find more joy and acceptance of her body, cultivate a sense of environmental stewardship, and develop mindful clothing practices. She hopes to share this feeling of confidence and empowerment with others on their sewing journey. Her approach toward garment sewing is mindful, sustainable, and inclusive of all sized bodies.
