Description: Young makers will learn the basics of machine sewing while creating their very own reusable tote bag. In this beginner-friendly class, students will be introduced to sewing machine safety, threading, straight stitching, fabric cutting, pinning, and seam construction. Along the way, they’ll build confidence using a sewing machine while developing creativity, patience, and problem-solving skills. By the end of class, each student will leave with a sturdy, personalized tote bag that’s perfect for carrying books, art supplies, or everyday treasures. No previous sewing experience is required.

Teaching Focus: This class focuses on building confidence, learning foundational sewing skills, and completing a project.

Week 1:Sewing machine basics, safety, threading the machine, and stitch practice.

Week 2:Learn to read a sewing pattern, prepare fabric, and cut project pieces.

Week 3:Begin constructing the tote bag, including the exterior pocket.

Week 4:Continue construction and create the bag’s 3D base.

Week 5:Attach straps and complete the tote bag.

Week 6:Personalize the finished bag with patches, embellishments, or other creative details.

Parent Requirements: Upstairs – drop off & sign in all students; pick up and sign out all students; Parents are free to stay for the class to assist your child; parents will be called to pick up their child immediately if there is an attitude or discipline issue.

Materials Included: Sewing machines, fabrics and all necessary tools and materials

Instructor: Jessica Vazquez

Jessica Vazquez is a Los Angeles–based fashion designer, tailor, and educator. Her work spans custom garment construction, on-set tailoring, and fashion education, with experience supporting both emerging designers and high-profile clients. She has formal training in fashion design and construction through Fashion Careers International and Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC), with additional coursework from FIDM. With a strong foundation in pattern-making, draping, and alterations, Jessica approaches design with a balance of technical precision and creativity. She is especially passionate about sustainability and often incorporates up-cycling into her work, transforming existing garments into new, intentional designs. Alongside her industry work, Jessica teaches sewing and design, encouraging creativity, confidence, and hands-on learning while helping students bring their ideas to life.

Location:

All classes take place UPSTAIRS in our CREATIVE SPACE unless otherwise noted. Use the exterior stairs on the side of the building to enter.
