Improvisational Quilting
Prerequisite: This class is for those who have taken Beginner Sewing 1 or know how to use a sewing machine.
Description: This class is about improvisational quilting: a process that’s playful, intuitive, and free from rigid rules. Students will learn the basics of improvisational quilting using reclaimed fabrics. The focus is on intuitive design—selecting colors, composing without a pattern, and assembling quilt blocks that are spontaneous and unique. The fabrics guide us and encourage us to embrace happy accidents along the way.
Materials Included: Sewing machines, fabrics and all necessary tools and materials

Instructor: Hannah Rose Dexter
Hannah Rose Dexter is an upright and electric bass player and composer, specializing in jazz, swing, new, and original music. She has also been sewing since she was 5 years old. She finished her first quilt at age 7, made from scraps off of her sisters’ and mother’s projects. As in music, she takes quilt inspiration from American tradition, innovation, and storytelling. She recently finished a quilt replicating the ceiling mosaic of The Guardian building in Detroit. She has traveled the world playing the upright and electric bass, released her second album of original music, and is currently studying suit making and tailoring at Los Angeles Trade and Technical College. She firmly believes every human is a musician and a quilter, and they just don’t know it yet.
