Family Art – Ringgold

Directions: Explore the art and storytelling of renowned artist Faith Ringgold in this fun, hands-on family art class. Participants will learn about Ringgold’s life and her innovative story quilts, which combine painting, fabric, quilting, and written stories. After looking at Ringgold’s artwork and discussing how artists can tell stories through pictures and words, participants will create their own mini story quilt using fabric scraps, paper, recycled materials, paint, markers, and collage elements. Each family member can create a scene based on a favorite memory, a family story, a special place, or an imaginative dream. The class encourages creative expression, storytelling, family collaboration, and appreciation for fiber and mixed-media art while demonstrating how everyday materials can be transformed into meaningful artwork.

Parent Requirements: Upstairs – drop off & sign in all students; pick up and sign out all students; Parents are free to stay for the class to assist your child; parents will be called to pick up their child immediately if there is an attitude or discipline issue.

Materials Included: All necessary tools and materials. Feel free to bring your own items to add to your story.

PLEASE NOTE: There is NO PARKING in the back lot for daytime classes due to staff needs. Please park on the street.

Instructor: Sarena Vasquez

Sarena (she/they) is an artist, yogi, and self-compassion enthusiast! She has a BFA in animation and feels a profound sense of purpose through community-centered initiatives. Her favorite way to explore creativity is through “play” where she tries to create without judgment, expectation, or rigidity. Sarena’s desire is to express herself with love & authenticity and to help others do the same – especially for the Queer and Neurodivergent community, through the wonderful world of art.

Because we need time to fill vacant spots, there are no refunds with less than 48 hours notice.
