Family Art – Rahr

Directions: Join this art experience inspired by the work of Tammy Rahr, a Cayuga artist, educator, and beadwork artist known for her work with traditional and contemporary Native American art forms. Her artwork has included beadwork, cornhusk dolls, and cradleboards, featured at the Smithsonian. Participants will learn about Rahr’s creative journey and explore how artists can use materials, patterns, symbols, and storytelling to express identity and connection to culture and then create their own small woven piece using colorful beads, fabric, recycled materials, and found objects. The class emphasizes creativity, family collaboration, and respectful appreciation of Native art traditions. Children and adults will have the opportunity to experiment with pattern and texture while creating an original piece inspired by the idea of art as a way to tell a story and connect us to the world around us.

Materials Included: All necessary tools and materials. Feel free to bring your own items to add to your story.

PLEASE NOTE: There is NO PARKING in the back lot for daytime classes due to staff needs. Please park on the street.

Instructor: Sarena Vasquez

Sarena (she/they) is an artist, yogi, and self-compassion enthusiast! She has a BFA in animation and feels a profound sense of purpose through community-centered initiatives. Her favorite way to explore creativity is through “play” where she tries to create without judgment, expectation, or rigidity. Sarena’s desire is to express herself with love & authenticity and to help others do the same – especially for the Queer and Neurodivergent community, through the wonderful world of art.
